In Zusammenarbeit mit klinisch tätigen Kolleginnen und Kollegen werden situationsabhängig infektiologische Fragestellungen untersucht. So konnte z. B. der Einfluss eines antifungalen Stewardship-Programms auf an einer Candidämie leiden den Patienten belegt werden. Das derzeitige Therapieschema der Toxoplasmose in der Schwangerschaft beruht auf den Daten einer entsprechenden Untersuchung an mehr als 600 schwangeren Frauen. Mit Corynebacterium goettingense konnte eine neue Corynebacterium-Art identifiziert und beschrieben werden, die wir nach der Stadt Göttingen benannt haben.
Darüber hinaus bestehen seit mehr als zehn Jahren intensive Kooperationen mit Partnerinstituten in
Ghana, Tansania und Indonesien, die zunächst – durch gezielte individuelle Fortbildungen und zahlreiche vom DAAD geförderte Summerschools – ein Capacity-Building zum Ziel hatten.
Die wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit konzentriert sich vor allem auf epidemiologische Themen aus den Bereichen gastrointestinale Infektionen, Mykosen, sowie schwangerschaftsrelevante Infektionen.
Diese Arbeiten haben gezeigt, dass die Epidemiologie der Clostridioides difficile-Infektion vor allem in afrikanischen Ländern anders zu sein scheint, als hierzulande. Unsere gemeinsamen Untersuchungen haben dazu beigetragen, dass regional in Ghana das schwangerschaftsrelevante HBV-Screening eingeführt wurde und in Tansania die Impfung gegen Röteln. Es konnte auch gezeigt werden, dass die Impfung gegen HPV die in Ghana vorherrschenden viralen Genotypen nicht ausreichend abdeckt.
