Diagnostics / patient care

The Institute of Medical Microbiology and Virology is responsible for the entire infection diagnostics in the patient care of the UMG and numerous external clinics. Depending on the problem, both classical methods of direct pathogen detection (microscopy and culture) and phenotypic resistance testing, as well as very modern molecular biological detection methods are used. For targeted investigations of risk organisms, the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Virology also has an S3 laboratory (e.g. tuberculosis) at the measuring site at Kreuzbergring 57, in accordance with the biosubstances ordinance. In addition, serological methods of antibody and antigen detection are performed.

Due to the expertise of the staff, new test methods are regularly developed or existing ones optimized. Associated with this, the Institute of Medical Microbiology has received international and national recognition and is currently a Robert Koch Institute appointed consultant or expert laboratory for toxoplasmosis diagnostics.
Regularly conducted infection visits, an Antibiotic Stewardship (ABS) team and daily personal telephone consultations are intended to ensure even closer infectiological-microbiological care of the university clinics and external hospitals and contribute to limiting nosocomial infections.
