Antibiotic and Diagnostic Stewardship (ABS)

General information about ABS at UMG

Antibiotic Stewardship was introduced at UMG in 2013 and has been continuously developed since then with the aim of continuously improving the quality of patient care, with a focus on targeted diagnostic procedures and prudent anti-infective prescribing. In particular, the focus is on an appropriate choice of active ingredient, dosage, mode of application, duration of therapy and TDM (therapeutic drug monitoring). Supporting the clinical staff on the wards in diagnostics and therapy through ABS consultations and visits is of great importance. The focus is on the optimal clinical outcome. At the same time, potential adverse drug reactions are taken into account, as are pharmacoeconomic aspects. The overall aim is to ensure rational anti-infective therapy. In addition to the best possible treatment of infections, the prudent use of anti-infectives is also aimed at counteracting the increasing incidence of resistant pathogens.

Effective ABS measures require good interdisciplinary cooperation. Currently, representatives from the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Virology, the Institute of Hospital Hygiene and Infectiology, the pharmacy, and various clinical departments participate in the ABS team.
